Wood Double Hung Window – Toronto

We replicated the glass pattern of the original wood double hung windows in this Toronto home. This is a sub-frame style installation where we leave the existing frame and mouldings intact.
The upper sash has glue-chip glass with lead tape. Glue chip is a fern-like patterned glass that was very popular in Victorian windows. The surface texture is created by applying a thin layer of glue to glass and then heating it in an oven.
The advantage of lead tape compared to real stained glass is that the soldered lead joints of the tape can be seen and touched. This provides a more realistic representation than having stained glass sandwiched between 2 panes of clear glass.
