Metal-Clad Wood Windows for a Heritage Farmhouse

4948

The front exterior of a modern farmhouse with large metal-clad wood windows, a welcoming porch, and a landscaped yard.

This 1880s heritage farmhouse in Alliston, Ontario has the kind of character you just can’t recreate—and that meant any updates had to be handled with care. The goal was simple: replace the windows in a way that respected the home’s history, without making it feel stuck in the past.

For this project, we installed metal-clad wood single-hung windows finished in black, a colour choice that adds contrast and definition while still feeling timeless. The single-hung style keeps the look clean and traditional, and the SDL (simulated divided lite) detailing gives a subtle nod to the farmhouse’s original window patterns. From the exterior, the windows feel grounded and intentional. Inside, the wood brings warmth that suits the age of the home.

These windows were chosen for more than just looks. The combination of a wood interior and a metal-clad exterior makes them a great fit for a heritage property—classic on the inside, durable on the outside. It’s a practical choice that doesn’t sacrifice character, especially important in a home that’s been standing for well over a century.

As with most older homes, installation required a thoughtful approach. Maintaining existing lines and working with the structure—not against it—was key. The result is a window upgrade that blends in seamlessly, rather than calling attention to itself.

Now, the farmhouse feels refreshed and cared for, not changed. The windows improve airflow, bring in natural light, and add a quiet confidence to the home’s overall look—proof that good design doesn’t need to shout.
